Doc Martin —. S5, Ep1. Error: please try again. Curmudgeonly Martin Ellingham's plans to resume his career as a consultant in London are put on hold with the birth of the son he fathered with his now estranged partner, Louisa Glasson.
S5, Ep2. The GP returns to his former post at the surgery after the departure of Dr Dibbs, agreeing to stay until a replacement is found.
S5, Ep3. New receptionist Morwenna Newcross gets off to a bad start after arriving late on her first day, and her hyperactive behaviour leads Martin to believe she is high on drugs.
S5, Ep4. Louisa's hippie mother Eleanor arrives in the village, immediately taking over Martin's kitchen to prepare a herbal tonic, which she later gives to the baby to stop his crying.
S5, Ep5. PC Penhale is shocked by the unexpected arrival of his ex-wife Maggie, who appears to have forgotten that they separated years ago and wants to know why he left her.
S5, Ep6. Maggie gets the all-clear from the doctor and decides she will return to Bude, forcing PC Penhale to take desperate measures to persuade her to stay in Portwenn.
This makes the town more and more three-dimensional and you may find yourself caring quite a lot for the individuals that make up this engaging little village; yes, even for the irascible doctor, whose own back story is rather quite poignant and makes his unbending personality more understandable.
The best thing about the series is that it accomplishes all this without the schmaltz that usually ruins programs of this genre.
For intelligent, humorous and charming entertainment, spend an hour in the village by the sea of Doc Martin. Who knows? Maybe someday, people will be trying to find Portwenn in the same way that fans of veterinarian-writer James Herriot have been looking for his fictional Darrowby.

Still enjoyable. Actually the US has quaint fishing villages in Nee England and the show would probably translate very well.
It could work there. The humor would have to be different, though. Thanks for pointing out that the Brits are the ones who copied an original American program!
Americans seldom speak about our country with such vitro. Do not let the Americans remake doc Martin as they can not copy the English humour and also all they do is shout.
Goes to show that some stereotypes are meant to be quashed. All they do is shout? How horribly stereotypical. While I love Doc Martin- why not allow others to be inspired.
Why be stingy. Nothing can take away from this show. Bet Shakespeare is delighted with all the joy his universal stories have brought audiences around the world.
I can tell you as an Australian, I have no need of the petulant, sycophantic narcissist that is your President. Keep him away from us!
What on earth does that have to do with the Doc Martin tv show? An hour long domestic version of Doc Martin will be about 40 minutes with 20 minutes of commercials to fill the hour.
Disgusting and revolting!! I am a British TV fanatic. Please no American redo. I watch anything British, Australian, French or Italian.
Do not mind subtitles. You name it, I have seen it. I agree. Americans shout or read their lines instead of acting.
Not only that AMerica has become an ugly country. Cornwall is beautiful — cannot be replaced with our boring towns.
I am an American. I just found out that Doc. Doc Martin is a ONE of a kind. Even as nice as it has been, there comes a time to move on.
It is in respect for the magic it captured. I hate it when Americans try to remake classic shows from other countries.
Rake was a bomb, and so many others. The Office is the exception. But leave Doc Martin alone! Kind of fall short on steaming milk though if they have a Pannarello wand.
Some people improve their Gaggias like the Gaggia Classic by removing the Pannarello and replacing it with a steam wand from a Rancillio Silvia machine, but still an appliance-class machine is limited it how good it can be.
Some things need to be left alone. I mean, can you imagine an American Fawlty Towers? Our movies have millions of dollars worth of sets and special effects but we also have a bunch of pretty but crappy actors.
I hate remakes anyway. I mean, George Clooney versus the Rat Pack. Come on, just say NO to dumb remakes. No one can replace the British actor or thier humor.
The British are basically masters of the stage and the word. They did do an American Fawty Towers, with a different name.
John Larroquette played the lead role. It was quite funny. I do agree though that most times the American versions fall short. Rarely can our remakes come up to par.
The brits have honed the craft of acting and writing. The English do grumpy and irascible much better than we Americans!
Because we are talentless when it comes to caustic and biting. It takes a certain degree of wit to portray such characters with a certain degree of believability and charm.
I read that and was seething…but then I realized your opinion is not worth getting upset over. You should be ashamed to be English. Name a good American comedy?
Frasier was excellent. I think the Americans have the capacity for good humor, as in the old romantic screwball comedies, but the trend now is junk.
Thank you Brits or keeping standards high. Great acting and terrific writing. There were, are, and will be plenty of quality American TV series.
Monty Python was insanely funny and so was Seinfeld. American writing is to blame as much as the actors. Nevertheless there have been supremely hilarious moments in the American past.
An American Doc Martin? Brits are the masters of the loveable grumpy character. I am American and I totally agree.
In my opinion, British TV and actors are much better. I never watch American programs. American TV, on the whole, absolutely stinks!!!
I am American, but I rarely watch shows unless they are British. The Brits have a knack for high brow humor without resorting to foul language.
American tv would have sanitized the heck out of it. We laugh all the time. What a travesty that would have been. My husband and I can watch reruns over and still and over and have laughing fits.
We throw a ton of special effects and crap rewriting and overly pretty, vapid actors and glitz it up into a kitchy facsimile of the original.
Shows like Detectorists and Endeavour. Strangelove, Young Frankenstein, etc. This was one of the best shows on PBS…. Not every time. The British version of The Office stunk!
The American remake was classic! Usually, though, I agree. I am an American and I must agree with you! It is unfortunate that American programs have become so terrible, and of such poor quality.
There is no real story line, the writing is lazy, and they sex it up so much that it is uncomfortable to watch! Thank you!

I totally agree. You apparently have the ability to articulate the point quite well. It has no place here. Hi Paty, El programa cuenta con hermosos paisajes.
Gracias por visitar nuestro sitio web. We have a knack for ruining a good show. Yes, The Office. Three seasons starring Ricky Gervase in the UK.
The show is so entertaining, Please keep it going for a longtime. The show has comedy, drama and all aspects of life in it. There aren't that many tv programs that I love to watch anymore.
It really is the the best. If anyone knows how to get Doc Martin on the 20th and which network will carry it this season please post here!

Martin Ellingham Martin Clunes , a London-based surgeon, relocates to the picturesque seaside village of Port Wenn, where he establishes himself as the area's general practitioner.
His reasons for leaving London and the high-paid life of a surgeon are not clear initially but related to a phobia he has.
He soon meets several of the locals and eccentricity abounds. Martin's situation is made more difficult by what can only be referred as an almost complete lack of an acceptable bedside manner.
He is gruff, abrupt, and intolerant, not only in issues related to medicine, but to life in general. He and the headmistress of the local school, Louisa Glasson Caroline Catz , are clearly attracted to each other and, despite their awkwardness, slowly develop a relationship.
Written by garykmcd. I thought that the story of an arrogant top-flight London surgeon trying to run a practice in a chummy town in Cornwall would make for a one-note fish-out-of-water series, but instead it has been a delight every week.
Doctor Martin Ellingham, for a reason that will be revealed later in the series, decides to transplant himself to a seaside village in Cornwall where he spent a few summers as a child with an aunt, who presently runs an organic farm there.
Being a terse, intensely closed, firmly impersonal fellow, he is appalled at the ways of the village people who consider themselves as one big, happy, nosy family.
Of course, in a series like this, we expected the clash of cultures between the coldly efficient doctor and the quirky little town to be the main storyline, but it is the diversity of their quirkiness some of which will surprise you!
While there is a lead cast -- Doctor Ellingham who intensely dislikes the too familiar "Doc Martin" that people insist on calling him , the head schoolteacher who develops an interest in him, despite herself, the affable teddy bear of a police constable, the exasperating receptionist with a chip on her shoulder, and the jokey, prank-loving plumber played by the wonderful Ian McNeice -- none of the characters that show up fleetingly in the beginning is actually a one-off.
Eventually, everyone's back story is brought to the fore.
